Me and my family are travelling during school holidays and it got me thinking "what tips are we using to help our sanity?" So this family trip has inspired me to write this blog. My tips are using my 9 and 6 years old sons to help with age appropriate.

You're in the car and your kids are bored "Are we there yet?"  Yes us parents have heard this one. Things we've been doing to keep our sanity is playing games like someone chooses 3 things the others need to find and when the 3 things are found then the person who found the last item has their turn.

Another game we all know I SPY someone says "I spy with my little eye something beginning with _____" and you all have turns guessing what the something is.

Guess the movie say a line from a movie you all know and the others try to guess what movie the line is from e.g "I'm the ghost with the most." Beetle juice.

Guess the song same as 'Guess the Movie' only its a song.

Every time you come to a bridge see how far you can hold your breath going over it.

Spelling game say words to spell and see who can spell the word correctly, again use age appropriate words for your kids.

The main game we've been using on our trip so far has been the find 3 things and hubby is great at finding things next to 9 years old son and 6 years old son and me well my eyes not as good as theirs ;)

When we were driving around bends our sons felt car sick so each downhill we imagined into a rollercoaster and put our hands in the air and "weeeee" like we were on a real rollercoaster, again using distraction and winding down window helps too if the rollercoaster doesn't work ;)

When we do road trips hubby does all the driving since I don't drive at all so I need to be considerate when hubby needs to pull over and sleep like it happened today. Hubby drove from Hokitika to Greymouth and heading towards Nelson we stopped in between and I took sons to play in a school playground so hubby could get the sleep he needed. If your hubby drives and you don't you're very important to keep him happy knowing he's doing all the driving.

The most important tip for families when travelling is take breaks when you need to especially on long road trips and if it's warm and sunny most places will have a swimming pool so go and cool off. Remember when out and about in the sun SLIP SLOP SLAP WRAP. Slip on a t-shirt, Slop on some sunscreen, Slap on a hat and Wrap on some sunglasses and remember to reapply sunscreen during the day to help prevent sunburn "ouch!".

Hope these tips help you families out there travelling save your sanity and allow you to have fun spending time together :)
